Kairos is a collection of small groups created for young adults to gather twice a month during the spring and fall semesters. Together, we share meals, tell our stories, discuss faith-based books, pray, and serve along side one another. The ancient Greeks used two words to describe time: Chronos and Kairos. Chronos time is what most people associate with the standard definition of time—it’s systematic, sequential, and often predictable. However, it’s also easy to become a slave to this kind of time. In contrast, Kairos time is refreshing and rejuvenating; without even a direct translation into English, this word is most commonly understood as a time “in between,” an allowance to be totally absorbed in the moment. Often, these times are pivotal moments providing clarity and new opportunities. As a collective, we aim to commune with God in Kairos time, to embrace these times “in between” as periods of growth and spiritual awakening. Kairos’ mission is to create space to allow young adults to connect with God and others on a deeper level. We launch each Kairos season with a feast. Everyone who has signed up to be part of a small group comes together for a meal and receives their book. During this time, the members are able to get to know one another and schedule their upcoming meeting times. After the meal, the author of the book is invited up to speak and reserves time at the end for questions. Kairos groups were deliberately set up to counteract Chronos time. Each small group has the liberty to create its own schedule and meeting times depending on group availability. Service projects are also set up to provide choices for groups with a wide range of passions and interests, and can be done on the group’s own time table. The only requirement is that groups meet eight times during the semester and complete one service project per month. |
